XXL Drawing and Postcards

20 Apr

I’m currently working on the largest drawing that I’ve done so far. The size is 80×60 cm (31.5 x 23.6″).
I got an amazing opportunity so I decided to do something “special”. More about that coming soon…

Large Size - Work in Progress

Besides that I’m doing some smaller drawings for fun. It’s a series called “Postcards” and it’s inspired by some of the places I’ve been and my surrounding.  The size of the drawings is only about 20×15 cm (7.9 x 5.9″). So it’s a welcome change.

Here you can see two “Postcard” examples:

Postcards...

Postcards...

No 1 is a Beach House in Ft Myers Beach, Florida, and the other one is of St. Pete’s Beach, Florida, and is a bit impressionistic.

I might sell some of these on Ebay.
If you are interested in having your own Postcard just visit my website (claudiasartwork.com) and contact me ;)
Have a good Day,

Claudia

Gia Carangi

13 Feb

In 2008 and 2009 I did some drawings of Gia Carangi.
Actually, Gia was my main source of inspiration when I started to do portrait drawing again.

Gia Carangi drawing

Gia

For those of you who have never heard of her, Gia Carangi was a supermodel in the late 70s, early 80s. Some even say, she was the first supermodel. Gia died in 1986 at the age of 26.
So, never ever had I thought, that I would be approached by someone who really knew her.

But a few days ago it happened. I was quite blown away when Sandy Linter a world-famous make-up artist and a very good friend of Gia thanked me “for the amazing illustrations of Gia”.
More about Sandy: http://www.facebook.com/OfficialSandyLinter

There is a very nice Gia group and obviously thanks to this group my Gia Carangi drawings got around. They are also on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/HeartandSoulGiaCarangi

Anyway, must have done something right, when someone who knew Gia well, likes my art :)

Pencil Artists Unite

6 Dec

Recently I received a letter regarding a local event in my hometown….
One of those small town things that you can do as a “hobby artist”, but they never result in great careers. Welcome to Austria…

Anyway, it contained pompous language, a spelling error, some promises for the next years (2012 or maybe later) and a postscript.

The latter suggested “to become more individual and unique” and combine my skills with “further artistic creativity”.
Whatever that means. Probably these words were well-meant, but I can’t avoid to say “well, f*** u. Do it better”.

It is obvious that someone there, has no idea about drawing and what realistic drawings are about.

There are dozens of talented pencil artists out there and what they are doing is much more beautiful and more valuable, than most of what is considered “art” by (self-proclaimed) art connoisseurs.

Art is a weird business. Paintings where you think “I did that in kindergarten” sell for millions, and “art”, where you seriously debate with yourself whether the artist should be put into a mental health facility or not, is classified as “brilliant” .

I admit I’m an artist and I’m not interested in art. Or to be more precise, I am “only” interested in realistic art and pencil drawings when it comes to fine art. These artworks you hardly every see at exhibitions. I’m not surprised at all, that “ordinary people” unlike “art connoisseurs” have no use for art. I don’t get abstract art either, it bores me immensely and I usually rather look at photography than paintings.

To all the talented pencil artists out their. Appreciate your work and talented. Every pencil artists knows that there is more to it than the eye meets. Pencil drawings are getting more and more recognition. For example in October this year a realistic pencil drawing won Art Prize, “an open art competition, giving away the world’s largest art prize.”

I will continue to do my art the way I want to do it. So should you. Don’t let anybody tell you what you do is not unique, it is unique! Nobody can do what you do. I also realised that usually only people who can’t draw, try to tell you what art ist…

Pencil artists unite ;) Drawing rocks!

blog absence…

3 Dec

Ok, I admit it, I’m an awful blogger. Drawing comes naturally to me, writing does not…

Anyway, a lot has been going on…

My website is growing fast and updated on a regular basis (unlike this blog, I know I know). I’ m planning to update the tutorial section by the way. So, if you have any wishes or ideas, let me know.

Local Exhibition

Local Exhibition

I had a local exhibition in my hometown  in November. It was a local art market, where several artists had the opportunity to present their art (see pic) .

In addition to that, I have a solo exhibition in January and some other opportunities are waiting.

I also keep getting more questions for drawing commissions and of course I’m working on my own projects. My current drawing is a bit tricky. It’s a pencil and colored pencil mix, and required extensive preparation. I’m going to write about it soon.

Read you soon ;)

Enjoy your day and don’t get stuck in the snow,

Claudia

La Renaissance de la Renaissance

13 Sep

You may be surprised but this time I actually dealt with “real art”, or to be more precise Renaissance art and Greco-Roman antiquity.

I had this Aphrodite theme in my mind for quite some time, but I didn’t know what  to do with the idea.

Detail of the "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli

Then I came across Sandro Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus”, and thought to myself:  ”How would this look, if the Venus / Aphrodite were painted nowadays?”
So I decided to modernise the subject and draw the “Modern Aphrodite”.

Surely a modern Aphrodite would exude a bit more self-confidence and be a bit more powerful, yet not overpowering. She is a goddess after all, the goddess of love!

I corrected the proportions, created a “new” face and changed the expression, altered the body position a bit and mixed it with the greek sculpture Venus de Milo (Aphrodite of Milos).

It took almost a month until I had it all put together. One day I might do a colored version of this drawing. But for now, that’s it.

So, here is my result:
The original drawing is a bit smoother than this photo, but you get the idea ;)
The  size is about 65 x 46 cm / 25.6″ x 18.1″. That’s all my drawing table and I can handle at the moment.

Enjoy your day,

James Dean and a cat paw

5 Aug

Have you ever started a new project or piece of work, and you felt extremely good about it? Everything was going smoothly, you were in the flow, it seemed to be the best thing you ever did and then “boom” someone puts an obstacle in your way and ruins everything?

In my case it was a cat paw, or to be more precise two dirty cat paws.

I had just finished the eye area of my newest James Dean drawing and for a change I was extremely pleased with it.  So I took a break, left the room, when someone let the cat… I heard an “oh no”,  rushed to my desk at the speed of light and the next thing I saw was my cat sitting on James Dean’s undrawn face.

But I remained calm…
Ok, I had a brief hysterical outburst, but right after the crying spell had ceased I regained my composure and started to erase the dirty imprints.

Despite this incident, I decided to continue instead of starting all over again.

Doing the shading was tough. However, in the finished drawing the dirty imprints are not noticeable any more. Unless you know the story ;) Otherwise you’d think it’s just a bit smudgy.

So, I learned my lesson. Now I always! cover my drawing before I leave the room.

Enjoy your day,
Claudia

Laetitia Casta drawing

14 Jul

This is one of my favorite “subjects” so far. The contrast between light and dark, shadows and bright sunlight made it really interesting to draw. It was also almost a “must do” to draw the eyes with colored pencil since they contrast so nicely with the graphite. Usually I find models to be too boring for portrait drawings to, but Laetitia Casta really has that “look”. I was reminded of that again, when I saw Rihanna’s music video with Laetita Casta (“Te Amo” european version).
In the original drawing the  shading is a bit smoother and the contrasts aren’t that sharp than in the photo, but nevertheless you get a good idea.

Lady Gaga – the Hype drawing

11 Jun

So here is another celebrity drawing. This time it’s a portrait of Lady Gaga.

Let’s face it, whether you like her music or not, you can’t escape her.

Frankly, in this world full of norms and standards how we are supposed to behave, conventions, repressions and hypocritical (religious) morals, someone like Lady Gaga is a relief.  We desperately need Gaga.

She is art and she is able to bring this kind of art to the mainstream. In addition to that, she manages to not just create a hype, but to maintain this hype. Kudos!

Lady Gaga - The Hype

Another tidbit. If you haven’t seen it already check out the new “Alejandro” video. It’s weird, provocative, maybe blasphemous and just brilliant. Or to be more precise – just Gaga:

Have a nice week-end everyone,

Claudia ;)
